This is a list of products that may be useful in relieving the symptoms of reflux. Crying Over Spilt Milk / GRSNNZ do not recommend these products as necessary and is not implying that they are better/safer/cheaper than similar brands. Please follow all instructions for any products you purchase.
ACUPRESSURE WRIST BANDS We had these suggested (not this particular brand - any brand will do) for Gem when she was going through a stage of vomiting or nausea even on short trips in the car. We felt this was related to her gastric reflux and were sceptical about the wrist bands but they really did help - lots!!
AVENT BABY Produce self-sealing bottles (i.e. no discs needed - just remove teat cover and use) etc. Bottles also can be converted to feeding cups. This site isn't a New Zealand one but gives you some idea what is available. There are some Avent products available through this site: babyuniverse - Avent and they are also available I think from Babycity, Farmers and some pharmacies.
BABY WRAPS
Wraps can be ordered from www.cradle2kindy.com.au and posted to NZ. These are apparently larger than any available in New Zealand.

BABY ROCKER
We borrowed a rocker similar to these that was great. The back height was adjustable - we had it as high as it would go. When she was really distressed we put her pacifier in her mouth and rocked her.

BOTTLE SPOON
May be useful to give medicine with. If you are thinking of using this instead of a bottle with a teat, or a bowl and spoon, please talk to a feeding expert about the impact that this might have on baby's development.
Breathing Sensor Monitors
Hi-Sense Babysense II Respiratory Monitor
ANGELCARE MONITOR
Prices from: babyuniverse
Breathing sensor monitor and intercom. These are not a medical device, but may put some parent's minds at rest knowing that it will alert them if their baby stops breathing. ?Available from Farmers and some baby stores. I'm not familiar with the Babysense one personally but it sounds very similar to the Angelcare monitor.
Respisense Breathing Effort Monitor
This product does not include an intercom but is portable and able to be used in positions other than the cot - e.g. car seat, pram etc. If you purchase one of these monitors through www.b2k.co.nz GRSNNZ can benefit as a referrer. Please include these details in the "message" section of the order: "GRSNNZ, www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/ContactGRSNNZ, 0800 380 517"

BUMBOBABYSITTER
Angelsinc.co.nz
A supportive moulded foam chair to help babies over 4kg with good head control sit upright.
I have also seen these in The Warehouse. I think the cost was @$60.
EEZIMED
Eezimed online ordering
Updated May 2006.
Medicine dispenser advertised in GRASP newsletters. I never had a problem giving medications but know that others do. This is shaped like a pacifier with a chamber to put the medicine into, and a plunger. Order from "Small Talk" 0800 762 558. Price in Sept 2000 was $22 including postage, but it seems to be a lot cheaper if you use the link on the left.
Similar dispensers are also available at some pharmacies.
EXERSAUCER/ACTIVITY PARK These are useful for keeping a baby from 3 months of age upright and entertained. I presume there are other brands available. I never had one myself but imagine they would be helpful. Maybe a toy library would have one you could borrow. Second childhood in Dunedin also rent them for a monthly fee. Toyhire have them to hire as well as for sale.
FOAM WEDGE
A foam wedge can be useful for a child in a bed or an adult with reflux. It allows the upper body to be slightly elevated but the bed to remain flat thereby reducing the amount of sliding down the bed that occurs. These can be ordered from mattress manufacturers if you give the dimensions. The one we got made was 840 x 610 x 180mm. Cost to get made was $50 uncovered. Do phone around a few places before getting one made. We covered it loosely with an old duvet cover cut in half and sewn.
Para rubber (www.pararubber.co.nz) also has a ready made wedge which is similar in size to the dimensions given above except that it is higher. These are @$65 and come with a zip off white cover. There is no information about these on their website but store locations can be seen.
Not suitable for use in a cot once a baby is able to stand as this would allow them to climb out.

The pull-over-the-head, velcro or dome type. The larger the better. Tie-on feeders/bibs should only be used with constant supervision as they are a choking/strangling risk. The Warehouse have had pull over the head feeders recently at a very reasonable price for a pack of ?three. We also found bandannas useful and cheap. The best were made from flannelette - 50cm square cut in half diagonally, overlocked with a rounded bottom corner and the thread ends sewn in. For thinner material you can use the whole square and fold in half.

NUK teats
sizes 0 -18 months
The distributor in New Zealand is "David Sparks Limited" Phone (09) 835-3919, if you need to find who stocks them in your area, or you can ask your pharmacy to order them. They are also available from The Baby Factory, Baby City, and Winkalotts.
NUK anti-colic Air system:
The valve is the heart of NUK Anti - colic Air system. It operates only during feeding, allowing a little air into the bottle to equalise the air pressure within. This prevents swallowing of air which is thought to be a common cause of colic. The valve is located on the side of the NUK teat. On latex teats it is an oblique slit. On silicone teats - it is a small disc.
NUK latex teat 102F (size 2 large hole, 2 per packet) has a cross cut hole which is specially suited to thickened formula or cereal. Pharmacode number 899054 (number pharmacy will use to order). All NUK teats and soothers have the vented Air System.

PACIFIERS
Pacifiers may help a baby with reflux to keep the acid in their stomach, and are useful to space out feeding when they constantly want to suck but are having a good weight gain and feeding constantly increases reflux pain. However, they are not without fault. They may also be difficult to get rid of. These articles may be of use:
